Haygrove School - Public Consultation Launches for New Haygrove School

Residents, parents, carers and stakeholders are being invited to help shape the future of education in Bridgwater following the launch of a public consultation on proposals for a new Haygrove School.

Working in partnership with Somerset Council, the Department for Education (DfE) and the Quantock Education Trust have secured a site at Queenswood, north of Spaxton Road, for the development of a new state-of-the-art school that will serve Haygrove students and the wider community for generations to come.

The proposed new school has been designed to accommodate up to 1,070 pupils and will provide modern, sustainable and inspiring facilities that support outstanding teaching and learning, student wellbeing and community engagement.

At the heart of the proposals is a two-storey school building designed to be net zero in operation, featuring solar panels, energy-efficient systems and a ground source heat pump. The plans also include high-quality indoor and outdoor sports facilities, extensive landscaping, dedicated transport facilities, improved walking and cycling routes, and a new central boulevard-style walkway known as 'Haygrove Way'.

Designed as a welcoming focal point for both school and community activities, 'Haygrove Way' will create a striking entrance to the campus while providing flexible space for events and gatherings.

The proposal places a strong emphasis on sustainability and enhancing the natural environment. Existing mature trees and hedgerows will be retained wherever possible, with additional planting introduced across the site to strengthen biodiversity and create attractive green spaces for students, staff and visitors.

The development has also been designed with accessibility and safety in mind. Proposed improvements include new footways and crossing points along Spaxton Road, reduced speed limits in the vicinity of the school, dedicated bus bays, extensive cycle parking and separate access routes for vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists.

The public consultation marks the latest milestone in the project and provides an opportunity for local people to share their views before a planning application is submitted to Somerset Council, which is currently targeted for September 2026.

While there are still several stages to complete before construction can begin, partners involved in the project are working at pace to bring forward the new school. The current programme remains focused on welcoming students to the new site in September 2029.

Commenting on the proposals, Mr Aaron Reid, Headteacher of Haygrove School, said:
"The new Haygrove School represents a significant opportunity to create something truly special for our community. We are excited to be building a school that reflects our shared ambition, supports our students to achieve their full potential and provides facilities we can all be proud of.

"As a school, we are very conscious of our history and the challenges that have shaped our journey over the years. These proposals are about creating a school that is built to last providing high-quality, sustainable facilities that will serve generations of students long into the future.

"The plans have been developed with a clear focus on delivering an environment that supports modern teaching and learning, promotes wellbeing and creates opportunities both inside and outside the classroom. We also recognise the importance of ensuring the school remains at the heart of the community through facilities that can be enjoyed by local people.

"This is a once-in-a-generation investment in the future of Haygrove School, and we encourage everyone to take part in the consultation and share their views as we take this exciting next step."

Ms Chrysta Garnett, Chief Executive Officer of Quantock Education Trust, said:
“This project represents a transformational investment in the future of Haygrove School and the wider Bridgwater community. Our ambition is to provide a learning environment that matches the potential of our young people and supports them to thrive both academically and personally.

“The proposed facilities will not only benefit students but will also provide opportunities for community use, helping to strengthen the school's role at the heart of local life. We encourage everyone to engage with the consultation and help shape this exciting next chapter for Haygrove.”
