Meet the CEO: A Conversation with Chrysta Garnett

With nearly 30 years of experience in education, Chrysta brings an array of knowledge, a healthy dose of compassion, and unwavering commitment to her role as Trust Lead. From classroom teacher to CEO, her journey is rooted in a passion for learning and a drive to ensure every child has access to transformative educational experiences.

What inspired you to work in education and eventually lead a Trust?

My passion for education came from a very personal place. I didn’t have a particularly strong experience of school - I was an ‘average’ student in mostly average schools. I wasn't particularly 'seen' by my teachers and didn't particularly shine apart from in English lessons, where I thrived. That success was entirely down to one remarkable teacher: Mrs Robinson. She saw something in me, challenged me, and encouraged me to believe in my own potential.

Because of her, I went on to study English Literature and Language at University—something no one in my family had done before. I’ve never forgotten what she gave me. I then wanted to become a teacher so that every child could have not just one Mrs Robinson, but several throughout their school life.

After completing my PGCE in 1996 I embarked on my teaching career and taught in school in Bristol, Yorkshire, Devon and then Somerset. Returning to Haygrove and what had become Quantock Education Trust in 2021, as Karen Canham retired, felt like a natural next step. The opportunity to lead the Trust was a continuation of my mission to give children the best possible experience of learning.

Chrysta's career journey:

Were there any key mentors or experiences that shaped your leadership style?

Absolutely. The Headteacher who appointed me at Halifax High School had a huge impact on me. He took a failing school and turned it around in just three years with bold, values-driven leadership. He showed me that you could lead with clarity and resolve, but still be kind, approachable, and deeply compassionate. That balance is something I’ve tried to bring into my own leadership ever since.

Walk us through a typical day in your professional life.

My days often begin early. Between 6.00 and 7.00am, I check emails to get ahead of any pressing issues across the Trust. I usually make work calls during my drive to Bridgwater, Bruton, or Crewkerne—whether it’s with Heads, external partners, or the central team.

Most of the day is spent in meetings—either strategic, operational, or both. There’s a lot of driving, plenty of strong coffee, lots of decision-making, and, hopefully, a few good laughs along the way.

What are some of the biggest challenges you face as a CEO, and how do you tackle them?

One of the biggest challenges is staying connected to the day-to-day realities our Heads and teams face in schools, while also maintaining a clear, strategic focus for the Trust as a whole. Balancing these perspectives is crucial.

Financial pressures in education are a constant challenge, and we’re often making tough decisions. But we do so collaboratively, guided by the Trust’s core values. I’m lucky to work with incredible colleagues who make even the hardest of days a little bit easier. This role is a team effort—and I never forget that.

What do you love most about your job?

The variety. No two days are the same, and while the role is undoubtedly demanding, it’s also an immense privilege to lead the Quantock Education Trust.

When you're not working, how do you unwind and find balance?

I have got much better at finding work/life balance as I have got older – but I wish I had come to the realisation sooner in my career! I am content now to call it a day at the end of a busy day’s work, knowing I have put a shift in, and know now that it is important I have time for myself. Sometimes you might me flogging myself at a gym class in the evenings (or very early in the mornings) or socialising with friends as well as signing myself up for interesting activity holidays like skiing, sailing trips or planning my next solo travel adventure.
